College History

E.M. Gopalakrishna Kone Yadava Women's College, Madurai was founded in the year 1974 at E.M.G. Kalyana Mandapam, Tallakulam, Madurai, Tamilnadu. The motto of the College is “Magalir Arivu, Kudumba Uyarvu“-which means “By educating a Woman we educate the whole family”. It was established with the aim of providing education to the underprivileged women students and now it has flourished into a First Grade College, providing value added education and career oriented courses for all. The mission of the institution is to achieve gender parity through women education and thereby creating a society in which the women become respectable, self reliant and self-sufficient.

The College is situated at Sirudhur Village, New Natham Road in a vast area of 15 acres donated by E.M.G. Charitable Trust in 1980 and is managed by E.M. Gopalakrishna Kone Yadhavar Mahalir Kalloori (Women's College) Association, Madurai. It is far from the madding crowd of the city.

The patron of the college is Thiru E.M. Gopalakrishna Kone, Madurai. His vision was to provide education for the economically and socially backward women and to uplift them to a state of dignity through economic prosperity and societal recognition. His desire was to spend the hard earned money through publishing and selling books to provide education to the poor and underprivileged women. To fulfill his vision, his son Thiru E.M.G. Soundara Rajan has generously donated 15 acres of land for this Institution.

Thiru. S. Gopalakrishna Yadav, an eminent freedom fighter and an industrialist, hailing from Kazhukumalai, was unanimously elected and continued to be the Secretary and Correspondent of this institution for the past 27 years. His selfless services and magnanimity have been recognized widely and the All India Yadava Mahasabha honoured him with the title “Bharath Yadava Ratna”.

The New Administrative Block constructed in the year 1999, has been named after him as “Bharath Yadava Ratna” S. Gopalakrishna Yadav Block

in recognition of his untiring services to this temple of learning. At the initial stage of the establishment of the institution there were only a few tiled buildings for all purposes. The monetary nucleus that sprang from numerous unknown men and women spread all over the country and abroad, enabled the Management to build the Main block.

A great patriot who dedicated her life for the welfare of women, a genuine well wisher of our institution, the former Chancellor of Sri Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore, Dr. Mrs. Rajammal Devadoss had extended her moral support throughout her life to this institution. In memory of her, ‘Dr. Rajammal Devadoss Memorial Block' was constructed with an outlay of Rs. 25 lakhs.

When on business to the northern states, our Secretary and Correspondent, “Bharath Yadava Ratna” Thiru. S. Gopalakrishna Yadav had gained the valuable friendship of the great personalities like Honourable Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav–the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Thiru. Chowdri Harmohan Singh Yadav (the former M.P.).Shri. Mulayam Singh Yadav generously donated Rs.10 lakhs for the construction of the hostel with an imposing structure, which was completed in 1992.

The Silver Jubilee of our institution was celebrated in 1999 with pomp and splendour. We also celebrated the Silver Jubilee of our Secretary & Correspondent Thiru S. Gopalakrishna Yadav in recognition of his continuous service for 25 years to this Institution, in March 2003. Thiru S. Gopalakrishna Yadav worked hard and sacrificed his life for the development of our college for 27 years until his demise in November 2004.
